If you are eligible to vote absentee (see reasons), you may cast your absentee ballot by mail. This option requires several steps, so it's a good idea to get started early. (For a faster method, consider voting absentee in person.)

Step #1. Obtain an official absentee ballot application from Fairfax County:

  • pick up an application form at a county government center or library; or
  • call the County Elections Office (703-222-0776) to request an application; or
  • download and print the application form (PDF file, ~270 kb).
In the military or overseas?
If you're away from Fairfax because of active duty military status, or if you currently reside outside the U.S., you should use the Federal post card application to request your absentee ballot. Read more about military and overseas voting.

Step #2 Complete and sign the application form, then submit it to Fairfax County:

  • by U.S. mail (County Elections Office, Suite 323, 12000 Govt. Center Pkwy., Fairfax, VA 22035); or
  • by fax (703-324-3725).
Please note that the application form MUST be signed, and it MUST be received by the County no later than the Tuesday before Election Day.
Application deadlines for 2012
  • For the Presidential primary (to be held Mar. 6):
Submit application by Tue., Feb. 28, at 5 pm
  • For the U.S. Senate & Congressional primary (to be held June 12):
Submit application by Tue., June 5, at 5 pm
  • For the general election (to be held Nov. 6):
Submit application by Tue., Oct. 30, at 5 pm

Step #3 The County will mail the official absentee ballot to you at the address specified on your application form.

Step #4 Follow the instructions in the absentee ballot package, mark your ballot, and submit it in the envelope provided. You MUST submit the absentee ballot either by U.S. mail or in person -- not by fax or email. The completed ballot MUST be received by the County no later than Election Day.

Ballot deadlines for 2012
