The close contests for the Board of Supervisors -- one county-wide and one in central Fairfax - were triggered by the election of former Board Chairman Gerry Connolly to Congress in 2008.
For Chairman, Board of Supervisors
The GOP candidate was Supervisor Pat Herrity of Springfield District. Pat has been a strong voice on the Board of Supervisors for fiscal responsibility in county government since his election in 2007. The Democratic candidate, longtime Supervisor Sharon Bulova, offered little change from the policies of the past. After 15 years of Democrat-led overspending in Fairfax, many voters agreed it was time to put a Republican in the chairman's seat. Herrity ran a strong race, finishing just 1% behind Bulova. Herriity continues to serve on the Board of Supervisors. Herrity campaign: www.PatHerrity.org
For Braddock District Supervisor
Republican candidate John Cook has been a respected neighborhood civic leader. His Democrat opponent, School Board member Ilryong Moon, raised far more money. But Cook's commitment to neighborhood issues proved popular with voters, and he won a narrow victory (89 votes). Cook is now the third Republican on the 10-member Board of Supervisors.
